Die Balvenie Destillerie bei Dufftown suchte Hilfe bei annerkannten Geschmackstestern außerhalb der Whisky Gemeinde, um den Ruf des Balvenie vintage cask aufrecht zu erhalten. Zwei Tee-Experten und ein Kaffee-Fachmann tauschten Teeblätter und Kaffeebohnen gegen Malt Whisky Fässer bei einem Tasting mit David Stewart, dem Malt Master der Destillerie. Zusammen wählten sie fünf im November 1972 abgefüllte Fässer für den The Balvenie Vintage Cask 1972 aus. Dieser ist nun für 300,- Pfund pro 0,7l Flasche (in einer Eichenholzbox) zu haben. Destilleriebesitzer William Grant and Sons hofft, an den Erfolg des letzten Jahrgangswhiskies (1971er) anknüpfen zu können, der bei der International Wine and Spirit competition 2005 eine Goldmedaille gewonnen hat.

Experts from the tea and coffee industries have been enlisted by a major whisky player to select a winning dram.
The Balvenie Distillery at Dufftown sought help from highly-regarded selectors and blenders from outwith the whisky industry to uphold the reputation of The Balvenie vintage cask.
International Tea Committee chairman Michael Bunston and his vice-chairman Tim Clifton along with Angus Kerr, chairman of the UK Coffee Trade Federation, swapped tea leaves and coffee beans for malt whisky casks at a tasting session. Along with distillery malt master David Stewart, they chose five casks filled in November 1972 which yielded 744 bottles.

The Balvenie Vintage Cask 1972 is now available at a recommended retail price of £300 for a 70cl bottle and oak presentation box. Distillery owners William Grant and Sons hope to emulate the success of The Balvenie Vintage Cask 1971, chosen last year, which earned a gold medal at the 2005 International Wine and Spirit competition.
