Pubs Claim Smoking Ban Has Hit Sales

Today marks the first anniversary of the ban on smoking in enclosed public places taking effect and the Scottish Licensed Trade Association (SLTA) claims that a third of pubs in Scotland have been forced to lay off staff.

The SLTA, which surveyed its members, says the ban has led to an 11% slump in drink sales. The survey was based on the responses of 530 members.

Scotland was the first part of the UK to enforce a ban through a law which aims to protect the general public from the harmful effects of passive smoking.
