„Inspektor Rebus“-Autor Ian Rankin entwickelt sich zum Experten für die Einweihung neuer Whisky-Räumlichkeiten. Nachdem er vor kurzem das neue Besucherzentrum bei Glenfiddich eingeweiht hat (siehe hier), war er gestern bei der Eröffnung des neuen „Tasting Room“ der Scotch Malt Whisky Society in Edinburgh. Dort berichtete er, dass seine Liebe zum Whisky schon mit acht Jahren begonnen hat, als er heimlich vom einer Flasche Bell’s seines Vaters probiert habe. Später, als „Twen“ (ein sehr schöner Scheinanglizismus ;-)), ist er dann mit einem Freund auf Destillerie-Tour gegangen. Nachdem sie ein paarmal gesehen hatten, wie Whisky hergestellt wird, haben sie beim Besuch einer neuen Brennerei nur noch gesagt: „Wir wissen, wie ihr euren Whisky macht – zeigt uns einfach die Probierstube.“
A question of taste
REBUS author Ian Rankin confided at the opening of the new tasting room at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in Edinburgh yesterday that his love of whisky began at the very young age of eight when he would sneak into the cupboard and take a tiny amount out of his dad’s bottle of Bell’s.
His father eventually twigged that something was going on as he would later mark his bottle so that he would know if it had been sampled.
And, in his twenties, Ian went on a tour of distilleries with a friend from America. After seeing the whisky-making process on a number of occasions – it doesn’t vary very much, it has to be said – they would eventually pitch up at a distillery and tell them: „We know how you bloody make whisky – just show us to the tasting room.“
